The UK is at a tipping point for electric vehicle (EV) use and sales are predicted to soar in the next few years, according to the AA.
It expects that more than 500,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will be in use by 2020, based on members' car buying intentions and future trends. Last year, nearly 30,000 plug-in electric vehicles were registered and sales for H1 2016 are up 30% year-on-year to 19,252, accounting for 1.4% of the new car market. One of the key barriers to adoption is a limited public recharging network, so the AA has partnered with charging provider Chargemaster to provide advice, support and access to a UK-wide network of chargers.
Making chargers more widely available will tackle concerns about electric vehicles such as range anxiety. Once this issue is overcome, Autovista Intelligence analysis suggests EV residual values could match or possibly exceed petrol and diesel vehicles.
