Toyota is bringing its hybrid car-sharing scheme to Europe, with initial launches in two cities and plans to rapidly expand.
Called YUKÕ – Japanese for ‘Let’s go’ – Toyota’s new hybrid-sharing programme will begin with pilot schemes in Dublin and Forlì, near Bologna in Italy. Uniquely, it will offer a variety of models, ranging from the B-segment Toyota Yaris Hybrid to the Prius, with plans to add its latest crossover, the Toyota C-HR Hybrid.
Initially, 15 cars will be available in three city centre locations in Dublin – a selection of Yaris, Auris and Prius models - and seven Toyota Yaris hybrids will be in circulation in Forlì.
Toyota Ireland chief executive officer Steve Tormey said: ‘We […] are very excited about the promise YUKÕ holds for addressing some of the key mobility issues in large metropolitan areas such as Dublin. We want to democratise our technology by providing customers access to the latest high tech hybrid vehicles.”
YUKÕ will help the cities tackle urban congestion and mobility issues, and will also improve air quality, with emissions around 10 times less than Euro 6 limits.
Irish Minster for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross said: ‘Low emissions, urban congestion and mobility are high on our agenda and we believe that the car-sharing model is a credible solution to improving these important problems.’
Toyota Motor Italia chief operating officer Andrea Carlucci added: ‘Full Hybrid technologies are the right answer to the important objective of zero emissions mobility in the city. We believe that this objective can really be reached.’
The news follows Volkswagen launch of its new Moia brand bringing on-demand vehicle shuttle services to two European cities from next year as it plans to become a leader in on-demand transport services.
