Smart becomes the latest brand to sell cars online

January 10, 2017

Following in the footsteps of other car brands such as Citroën and stablemate Mercedes-Benz, Smart cars are now available to purchase online in the UK. Customers can place an order by simply creating an online account, reserving a car by providing a £250 holding deposit and completing a credit application. Once a customer’s credit application has been approved, their contract will be emailed to them and they can then choose to either collect their new car from a local retailer or have it delivered direct to their home.

Using the same approach as that taken by parent Daimler AG stablemate Mercedes-Benz, the online store offers a number of pre-configured models. In the case of Smart, these are based on the popular prime model line and are available with black or white panels and a black tridion cell. There are three payment packages, enabling customers to choose from either a lower monthly payment, a standard offer, or a lower deposit, starting from £119 a month.

Krishan Bodhani, head of Smart in the UK, said: ‘Almost anything can be bought online now and we’re delighted to offer this option to our customers when purchasing their smart. It’s really easy to do and is extremely time-efficient, enabling a customer to make a reservation, fill in a credit application and sign a contract at a time and place that works for them.’

Given that consumers are far more inclined to purchase cheaper cars online and the fact that the Smart range is comparatively limited, especially in terms of engine choice, it is slightly surprising that this initiative was not rolled out sooner.

UK sales flat despite upcoming road tax hike, diesel demand plummets

March 08, 2017

UK new car registrations fell annually by 0.3% in February to 83,115 units according to the SMMT, driven down by weaker demand from individuals and companies. More noticeable, however, was the 9.2% drop in demand for diesels compared to February 2016, a steeper drop than the decline in Germany...
