SEAT launches car-sharing scheme

November 21, 2016

SEAT will launch a car-sharing programme for its 14,000 Spanish employees in 2017.

The scheme is one of a number of car-sharing services that the carmaker is developing in response to the changing mobility habits of customers.

Employees will use online software to book vehicles from the company’s fleet. Vehicles that are currently allocated to a specific user will be eligible for booking by all employees.

As part of the development, SEAT is also working on a car-sharing smartphone app that it will roll-out to customers so they can make their own car available to other users.

The system works as a digital key so drivers can allow other app users to unlock their vehicle using a pin number on their phone, if the car has been fitted with a digital locking system.

SEAT is one of a number of manufacturers that are developing car-sharing systems to adapt to the changing mobility needs of customers.

Nissan recently announced a scheme that will allow anyone to part-own a new Nissan Micra by using social networking to match buyers with similar profiles.

It will build ‘car-sharing communities’ that will bring together people in the same area with the same car-driving needs.

Shared access to the vehicle is managed via a smartphone app similar to the system proposed by SEAT.

Smartphone keys are becoming more popular, with Volvo also launching a car that can be unlocked using an app that allows owners to share access codes with other smartphone users.

The proliferation of digital access codes is likely to raise security concerns as authorities struggle with a global rise in theft through hacking electronic systems.

Targets have included banks, mobile phone companies and carmakers.

UK sales flat despite upcoming road tax hike, diesel demand plummets
