PSA launches 500-car emov car-sharing scheme in Madrid

December 22, 2016

On Monday, PSA launched a major car-sharing scheme in Madrid through its Free2Move brand. The emov scheme, which uses a large fleet of 500 Citroën C-Zero electric vehicles for the initial roll-out phase, was launched in the presence of the Mayor of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, and covers an area considerably beyond Madrid’s city centre.

The service runs under a ‘free floating’ concept, which allows users to use a vehicle, then drop it off at their convenience in Madrid. Users pay €0.19 per minute or €59 per day. Users sign up online or via smartphone apps. The service is then operated through their smartphone and can be used 24 hours after signing up. The smartphone app allows users to reserve a vehicle free of charge 30 minutes before use. It is also used to lock and unlock the rented vehicle.

The area covered is one of the main advantages of emov. The Citroën C-Zero can be used beyond Madrid's city centre, serving part of the outskirts of the city, and the nimble nature of the vehicles, with a 150km range, means they can be driven around the city with ease. The cars also have a smartphone Bluetooth connection and recharging via a USB port.

Driving a 100% electric vehicle offers significant advantages in Madrid. The service enables free parking in parking spaces that are usually payable, within the area covered. emov users can also make journeys without being affected by traffic restrictions in the event of pollution peaks. Lastly, users can also access areas reserved for residents and zones with temporary traffic restrictions.

Mayor of Madrid Carmena said: Madrid aims to become the European capital in shared electric mobility and this project is the latest initiative to have chosen Madrid as the location for its global launch.'

Chief Executive Officer of emov, Fernando Izquierdo, added: emov has arrived in Madrid with the intention of becoming one of the defining elements of this city. We are convinced that our fleet, which initially has 500 100%-electric vehicles, will be very well received by residents. In just a few days, more than 3,000 people have already signed up to the service, which allows us to feel very confident of emov's success. Through 31 January 2017, new users who enter the code “viveemov001” on the website can sign up for free and get the first 30 minutes of use at no charge.
