Peugeot concept shows off autonomous plans and powerful connectivity

February 28, 2017

PSA Group’s Peugeot is set to showcase its autonomous and connected car technology with the Instinct estate concept car at March’s Geneva Motor Show.

The instinct demonstrates Peugeot’s autonomous intentions for the first time, and includes level five autonomy – also known as full autonomy, equivalent to a human driver under every scenario.

Peugeot head of strategy, Aude Brille, wants to see this technology implemented in its cars by 2025 – in line with dates mooted by rivals including Volkswagen and Mercedes.

The Instinct also shows the powerful potential of the connected car as part of the ‘Internet of Things’. Using Samsung’s Artik Cloud cloud software, data can be aggregated and interpreted across devices ranging from smart watches, to smartphones and social media to provide an optimal experience for the driver at any particular time.

For example, as soon as you start the car engine, your smart house doors could automatically lock. On your way back, the car could switch to autonomous ‘Soft’ mode, after finding out from your smart watch that you are tired after a workout at the gym.

Peugeot parent PSA Group aims to introduce its first vehicles with full autonomous control options from 2020.

Next month, PSA will start testing autonomous cars on motorways with ‘non-expert’ drivers, having become the first carmaker to obtain permission from the French government to carry out such tests.

To further its connected car technology, PSA has also partnered with Ericsson and Orange for field trials with 5G technology alongside Qualcomm. Two scenarios are tested, with two vehicles communicating with each other, and notifying a driver when an emergency vehicle is approaching.

Such OEM partnerships with tech connected devices are discussed in Autovista Intelligence's report The Intelligent Car.

UK sales flat despite upcoming road tax hike, diesel demand plummets

March 08, 2017

UK new car registrations fell annually by 0.3% in February to 83,115 units according to the SMMT, driven down by weaker demand from individuals and companies. More noticeable, however, was the 9.2% drop in demand for diesels compared to February 2016, a steeper drop than the decline in Germany...
