Nissan will put autonomous vehicle technology on the road in August in Japan and in Europe in 2017 when its latest models go on sale.
The ProPILOT system can operate steering, accelerator and braking on single lane roads, but will not be capable of changing lanes. A multi-lane version will launch in 2018, while software updates that allow autonomous driving in city centres and at turnings will be ready by 2020.
The first use in Europe will be in the new Qashqai.
The announcement comes as autonomous systems come under greater scrutiny for their performance on the road. In the US, a road safety group has called for Tesla to withdraw its self-driving system after three crashes, including a fatality in May when a vehicle was in autonomous mode. US safety authorities are investigating.
