Companies that let employees drive their own cars on business are exposed to massive hidden vehicle costs that they can’t properly control, a new report claims.
The cost of the co-called ‘grey fleet’ to UK companies is estimated to be £5.5 billion a year, but that is mainly hidden in mileage expense claims from employees that sit in departmental budgets and are rarely linked to vehicle costs.
The Energy Saving Trust (EST), which wrote the report, says grey fleet vehicles cover 11 billion miles a year, but they tend to be older and more polluting, which undermines the environmental benefits achieved by companies operating new cars.
Together with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, which commissioned the report, it has called for the government to encourage companies to switch employees to new, less polluting vehicles by using rental cars for ad-hoc journeys and company cars for employees who cover more than 10,000 business miles a year.
